Haru Urara ハルウララ
(a place of love and remembrance of)
The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere
Haru Urara (ハル ウララ, lit. "graceful spring". short: Urara, Urara-san, affectionate: Uu-chan) was a Japanese racehorse beloved by many. Her birthday is February 28th, 1996. Through her six year long career in racing, Haru Urara lost all 113 races she entered. But every time she was on track, she gave it her best; this tenacity, along with her docile and friendly personality aspects and the name-related particularily pink garments, earned her a fame of a precious horse who never gives up. Towards her career's end, her most frequented Kouchi racetrack would set up an "Urara gallery" with her photos, size models and other merch flying off the shelves. Haru Urara betting tickets were taken home as collectibles, and some put them in their cars as a safe-travels omamori.
The RHA of Japan assisted in taking care of Uu-chan in her post-racing years, most of which she spent peacefully at Martha Farms, south of Chiba. She was being consistently visited by her fans there. Martha workers describe her as cute and affectionate - yet sometimes bratty and demanding; she would nuzzle people and be silk gentle, but absolutely refuse neck pats and always expect carrots~. During that period she ran retired racehorse timed races and did, in fact, win her first ever race in 2018! At about the same time, Urara started getting popular internationally; i remember learning about her sometime in 2022/3. Haru Urara fans donated so much rye grass to her that it was enough to feed the entire farm's horses! Towards 2024, Haru Urara's international fame entered its peak after the international release of umamusume: pretty derby, a game with a character based on her. Uu-chan (and the farm) enjoyed many more visitors and donations, and she became hot topic for the second time in her life! Her sudden passing on September 9, 2025, was a sharp and painful strike to both her caretakers and the fans, myself included. Haru Urara lived a long and fulfilling life. Her tenacity, persistence and kind gentle nature won the hearts of thousands, to whom she is a shining star and proof that you don't have to be the champion to be loved and have fun. We love you, Haru Urara!
Uu-chan's Lucky Charm
Haru Urara betting tickets are used as omamori, usually for safe car travel - but i give them a broader sense. To me, the luck Haru Urara grants is for ending up loved and cared for despite not being an undisputed winner, pushing hard for your dreams while having fun, and preserving gracefulness.
I want one a lot, but they are not easy or cheap to get, so i made an HTML/CSS replica to get lucky paving my own losergirl path. It's from her 100th race, at Kouchi Racetrack with legendary Yutaka Take as her jockey - one of the few times she was the favoured-to-win. Feel free to grab one for your page - since it's html/css, you can even (respectfully) customize it!

On a personal note...
I learned about Haru Urara's existence early 2023 or so. I've never been #1 at anything i do - something that always hurt, since i do have some competitive spirit. While always giving it my all, i never achieve anything extraordinary. Haru Urara became my shining star and, in a way, a teacher - she made me look back on everything i did and realise that not only did i give my best every time without giving up and am strong like her for that, but also despite never having been #1, i have people genuinely excited about what i do and made a lot of friends and nice-connections by being myself and doing what i love. Thank you, Haru Urara!

The day Haru Urara left us i made a promise to keep her spirit in my heart until i meet her on the other side. This means that while here, i will not back down no matter how many times i flop, i will not let my losing streaks and the world make me any less kind and graceful, and i will always give my dreams the best shot while having fun! The same day, after having been visiting the local thrift store daily for weeks on question of horse figurines and never finding one, they finally had a small ceramic horsie for a tear-stained me. She's white, but her mane is soft pink, and she has a colder pink five-petal flower in it - and i refuse to call this a coincidence; it felt like a hey-don't-cry nose bump from Uu-chan herself. I will cherish this tiny horsie forever <3
Urara the Umamusume
Although not the reason i know and love Haru Urara, i would be lying if i said i'm not affectionate towards her Uma interpretation from the horsegirl game. They did a good job translating her story and personality - even though she wasn't always flowers and nuzzles - and it's touching to see that even after Uu-chan left us, she continues cheering us on in many shapes and forms. And i gotta say, i absolutely hate pickles too!
After the game's international release, the Uma almost became Urara's mascot. She's so popular that a lot of artworks from Haru Urara fans portray her through the Uma. They are beautiful and full of emotion. The Uma contributed to real Haru Urara's (and the farm's) popularity.
Supporting horsies that are still there
Haru Urara is an inspirator who will live on forever in our hearts. It is crushing that she left us so suddenly. But if one had to point out her true luck - it's that even after her 113 consecutive losses, she was not abandoned and lived a long happy life, outliving the median by at least half a decade. Many Japanese racehorses who are not winners (and even more so across the globe, especially in the USA) face fates more grim. In my eyes, the idea of "horses racing" itself is not to blame, but the poor regulation and safety net absence, as well as the maximalisation of profit under capitalism by racing associations. All horses deserve a long and fulfilling life! I encourage you to learn about and support the cause if you can.
How?
Japan has a Retired Horse Association (RHA), which is in part responsible for Haru's longevity; the main reason it can't keep all the horses that the industry deems unworthy is its lack of funding. While the job of pressuring the Japan Racing Association to allocate more money for the horses' retirement and share them more evenly between winners and losers is, in my view, best left to people on the ground, the way we can support RHA is by donating or buying their merch.
In the USA there are numerous private horse sanctuaries, but the ones in the direst need of support are the municipal ones, often called "kill shelters". The reason they got this scary reputation is because they're underfunded by the government and are legally bound by the same people to take in any horse at any time, so they face severe overloads. So, start calling them "municipal shelters" and consider supporting your local one if you're in the USA.
The UK has its own World Horse Welfare which operates inside the country as well as globally. It appears to be reputable among horse people and hold a long history, but more research on it has to be done.
Europe seems to have a fairly decentralised and disorganised situation with horse welfare organisations, so i'm not ready to put any hard recommendations yet - input is welcome. There is the European Horse Network with its member organisations, which may be the first place to look around... FEI, known rollkur enablers, are on the list, though, so :/ ???
If you know a reputable organisation that works hard for the cause, let me know and i will put it here! Currently missing info on Europe, Asia, Australia and South America.
